PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES
A. THANK YOU TO THE PFC AND
TO ALL THE SUPPORTIVE PARENTS OF THE SPRINGHILL COMMUNITY WHO HAVE
STEPPED UP DURING THIS STATE AND DISTRICT BUDGET CRISIS TO COMMIT TO
EXTRA FUNDS TO HELP MAINTAIN CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PERSONNEL AT OUR LOCAL
SCHOOLS!!! Not only did you help in passing MEASURE J last November,
allowing the District's current budget shortfall to be only $1.74
million instead of a $3.5 million, you are now joining in with the other
parent clubs, LASF and other resources to address the shortfall. THE
SPRINGHILL STAFF AND I THANK YOU FROM THE VERY BOTTOM OF OUR
HEARTS!!!
B. THANK YOU TO ALL 5th GRADE
PARENTS who attended
and participated in the Annual 5th Grade Colonial Days at the Samman
Barn yesterday. It was a fantastic learning experience for our students
and could not have taken place without your help!
C. PLEASE NOTE ON THE
CALENDAR THAT FRIDAY, MARCH 14, IS A STAFF INSERVICE DAY AND A STUDENT
HOLIDAY. THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL THAT DAY!
D. THANK YOU TO ALL ATTENDED
THIS WEEK'S LASF MATH NIGHT! As always, it was an
entertaining and informative evening and enjoyed by all with many
fascinating projects built. Thank you to LASF and especially to all of
the parent volunteers and to Mrs. Kathy Hamilton for coordinating the
event. Well done!
E. ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU SO
MUCH to the PFC and
to Dianne MacArthur for the exceptional gourmet Teacher Appreciation
Luncheon this week. As always, it was unbelievably delicious and greatly
appreciated!!!
C. Join the PFC! Register for
e-SCRIP!!
DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*
Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week,
we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of
Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss
it!!!
In Ms. Hungerford's 5th grade, Words Their Way is utilized
where the students are assessed with a spelling inventory to determine
where they are in the five developmental stages of spelling development.
They then work with word lists specific to their needs.
*Differentiated
Instruction is not individualized instruction, but rather the delivery
of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning
style while always challenging them at their ability level.
PAY IT
FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including
different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the
Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any
well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at
Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It
Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in
the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at
Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward
program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was
originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts
remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless
nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts
themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in
the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who
performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will
continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this
change. Thank you. Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!
1. STUDENT COUNCIL JAMBA JUICE
FUND RAISER FOR CHRISTOPHER RODRIGUEZ: Thank you to all who
participated in this fund raiser for the 10 year old Oakland boy who was
paralyzed by a wayward bullet while at a piano lesson. It was a great
success; details to follow---thank you Student Council for your
compassion and concern for this unfortunate boy.
2. MARCH FUND
RAISER: Be looking
for Student Council to sponsor a fund raiser to address school supplies
for a classroom in the village of Sotuba, outside of Bamako, Mali, in
West Africa. More information to follow!
3. PENNIES FOR
PATIENTS: Starting
Monday, we will have our annual Pennies for Patients drive to benefit
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It will go from March 10-March 28.
Leave that spare change in the collection box in each classroom and help
find a cure for Leukemia & Lymphoma!!!
4. RUN FOR KIERAN; Stanley
Middle School, 9:00 AM, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, supporting Stanford
Children's Research Center and the Lafayette School District's Special
Ed Program!!

Dr. Seuss book and then enjoyed a light breakfast reception. - all
the 5th grade parents who helped make this week's Colonial Days event
possible for the kids! Everyone seemed to have a great day spent at the
Sammann Barn. - all the parents that attended the special general
meeting on Wednesday night. Many questions were answered and a unanimous

thanks to Meagan Haaglund for organizing the LASF sponsored Math Night
with Lawrence Hall of Science. We had a great turn out !!! A BIG thank
you to the many volunteers who helped guide the stations and especially

LASF
ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DRIVE STARTS APRIL 27TH!!! LASF
provides top quality curriculum-based programs in science, humanities,
technology and the visual and performing arts. As the Lafayette School
District faces a budget shortfall of $1.74 million next year now, more
than ever, LASF plays an essential and vital role in ensuring the
continuation of our strong academic programs. LASF relies entirely on
the support from our parent community to provide its funding. We will be
contacting all families in the district by telephone to ask for
donations for the 2008/09 school year. To avoid the phone call and help
us target our limited volunteer resources, please make your pledge by
Friday April 25th.
Donate through
PayPal!! New this year! You can make your donation
on-line via PayPal on the LASF website (www.lasf.org). If you have any questions,
please contact Springhill's LASF fundraising representative, Julie Novak
at thenovaks@sbcglobal.net or 930-9435.
VOLUNTEERS
NEEDED!!! For the upcoming LASF
Phonathon beginning April 27th and ending May 6th. Please consider
donating a few hours of your time to help in this worthy cause. This is
it - the major fundraising event for LASF so that it can fund programs
for the 2008- 2009 school year. We need your help to make it happen. For
dates and more information, please contact Springhill's LASF fundraising
representative, Julie Novak at thenovaks@sbcglobal.net or

| This Week at the Library | |
This Week in the Library Have you ever wondered what it
might have been like to grow up during our country's colonial era? This
past Thursday Springhill's fifth graders got to experience what that
might have been like. They dressed in colonial style clothes, worked on
projects similar to those colonial children worked on, and even played
colonial games. As part of their preparation for the day we read and
discussed Mary Cobb's book, A Sampler View of Colonial
Life. We learned that embroidering numbers and letters on their
samplers was the only formal education some girls had. We found out that
they couldn't go to a store and buy the cloth and thread that they
needed but that they had to make it (and dye the thread). We read some
of the common verses used on samplers and saw some of the fancy stitches
older girls learned to use. Ask your fifth grader about her favorite
project for Colonial Day.
Fourth graders continued their art in
picture books study by learning about watercolors and gouache and how
these media are used by illustrators. Then we looked at several picture
book examples and discussed what we noticed. Finally we read Leo
Politi's 1950 Caldecott winning book, Song of the Swallows,
which is a story about Mission San Juan Capistrano illustrated in
watercolors. Politi was born 100 years ago in Fresno, moved with his
family to Italy, and, as an adult, came back to the USA to live on
Olvera St. in LA. Much of his art focused on Mexican American customs,
traditions and celebrations.
All the fourth and
fifth graders voted on their favorite of the three nominees in the
Picture Books for Older Readers' category for the CYRM
award.
This week in the library we also continued to read some of
the nominees in the Primary category for the California Young Reader
Medal award. To find out more about CYRM visit their website at http://
californiayoungreadermedal.org/.
We can mail letters and
packages, but have you ever tried to mail a hug? The third graders heard
and acted out The
Giant Hug. Owen wants to mail a hug to his grandmother but his
mother is not sure that's possible. This book is a sensitive look at how
others respond to simple friendly gestures. Ask your student if there is
anyone special to whom she would like to mail a hug.
Can you
imagine a bunch of buccaneer bunnies sailing around on a ship called the
Salty Carrot? The second graders heard Henry and the Buccaneer
Bunnies, a story about Barnacle Black Ear and his son Henry, who has
no taste for the sordid seas. Ask your second grader what Henry liked to
do more than buccaneering and why that was important.
Have you
ever imagined that an action figure comes to life and has all kinds of
adventures right in your own environment? The first graders heard Traction Man Is Here!,
the story of an action figure who overcomes dangers and fights evil
wherever he finds it, such as protecting toys from evil pillows. Ask
your first grader which of Traction Man's adventures was the most
daring.
New Books in the Library Penny from
Heaven by Jennifer
Holm is the story of an eleven-year-old Italian American girl in 1953.
It's summer and Penny is dealing with not being able to go swimming at
the public pool because her mother's afraid she might get polio; her
large family, neither side of which is speaking to the other; and the
mystery surrounding her father's death. When disaster strikes will it
pull Penny's family together?
Happy Birthday to
our Author of the Week! Peggy Rathmann was born on March 4. Born
and raised in Minnesota, she now lives with her husband on a ranch in
Nicosia, California. Many of her stories have come out of experiences
she and/or her family have had. She has written and illustrated many
picture books for children, including the 1996 Caldecott winner Officer Buckle and
Gloria. Some of her other titles are 10 Minutes till Bedtime, The
Day the Babies Crawled Away, and Good Night Gorilla.
You can check out all of these and many others either here or at the
public library.

Pick Up a Book, Bulk Up Your Brain
Don't deny
yourself the luxury of curling up with that murder mystery, tragic tale,

Being a

| Acalanes Union High School District 2009-2010
Calendar | |
When Does School Start?
For the past two years, the
Acalanes Union High School District (AUHSD) has been considering a
calendar that would end the first semester at winter break by starting
school the third week of August and ending school the first week of
June. This proposed calendar is an outgrowth of the AUHSD Strategic Plan
and negotiations with the AUHSD teachers, which is required under
collective bargaining. The AUHSD has been considering this calendar for
the following reasons:
á The calendar provides longer blocks of
uninterrupted instructional time throughout the academic year,
especially in January and February after winter break. (January is
broken up by two legal holidays, a teacher workday, and four half-days
for semester exams before two legal holidays in February.) á The
calendar provides students with a true, two- week winter break by
completing first semester exams in December. There are no exams hanging
over the students during winter break, which has been identified in some
research as one factor that can reduce student stress. (Acalanes and
Miramonte high schools are working with the Stressed Out Students
Program at Stanford on ways to reduce student stress. Ending the first
semester at winter break is one change that schools have made to address
stress.) á Students
return in January refreshed to start a new semester rather than two
weeks of review and/or new material prior to semester exams. á The
calendar is consistent with the AUHSD Strategic Plan (Action Plan
3.3).
Under the collective bargaining agreement, the calendar was
agreed to by both the District's and the teachers' negotiation teams in
the spring of 2007. The AUHSD Board considered the proposed calendar on
June 6, but did not vote; on August 29, but had a tie vote; and on
October 17 when it adopted a traditional calendar for 2008-2009. The
Board then directed staff to form a Calendar Committee to consider
issues when developing the 2009-2010 academic calendar.
The committee
composed of 24 individuals (3 students, 3 administrators, 18 parents
representing all K-8 districts and AUHSD) will meet five times before
presenting its report to the AUHSD Board. The committee is reviewing the
key issues (e.g., starting date, alignment with K-8 districts, impact on
family vacations and summer programs, student stress) and will present
information on both sides of the issue for consideration by the AUHSD
Board. The committee will not make a calendar recommendation since the
calendar is subject to collective bargaining. Five public forums have
been held to allow parents to provide input on the calendar.
Additionally, the six
districts (Acalanes, Canyon, Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, and Walnut
Creek) held a joint meeting conducted by an outside facilitator to
identify the common issues and barriers to the calendar. Each district
was represented by the superintendent, a Board member, and a teacher,
classified employee, and parent representative. An online parent survey
is tentatively planned.
On March 19, the
Calendar Committee will present its report to the AUHSD Board, but the
Board will not make a decision. At the April 16 AUHSD Board meeting, the
Board will give direction to the district negotiation team in Closed
Session, who will then negotiate the calendar with the Acalanes
Education Association. Negotiations are not a public process. Once
negotiations are complete, the calendar will be presented to the AUHSD
Board to ratify.
On the AUHSD
webpage, www.acalanes.k12.ca.us, the
following information is available: á Report of the Calendar
Committee (available March 17) á Board reports and a FAQs on the
calendar

By
now you are undoubtedly aware that despite the passage of Measure J and
the tremendous fundraising efforts at Springhill, the budget crisis in
California is causing the state to eliminate funding to our school
district. As a result our district is facing a 1.7 million deficit,
which has to be resolved since the the Lafayette School District must
present a balanced budget to the County. This may well translate to
lay-offs in personnel or the termination of important programs.
In an effort to
prevent some of these cuts it is imperative that we achieve full
participation in school fundraisers. In that vein, we ask all Springhill
families to enroll in the eScrip program. It literally cost you nothing.
When you shop, Springhill gets a direct donation/percentage of your tab.
The enrollment process takes three minutes, it is both easy and secure.
Please visit the eScrip website at www.escrip.com and click on "1 - Sign Up,
it's Free." If you prefer, call the eScrip hotline at 1-800-700-5655 and
hit prompt 4. Springhill's ID # is 137331069. Designate your
donations/contributions to go to Springhill.
Though most
participants sign up under the Safeway Grocery Store donation, remember
you can sign up with a number of vendors, including Visa. Every time you
make a purchase, a direct contribution comes back to Springhill. Our
local merchants are ready, willing and able to help our school district
through this financial crunch, by all means lets use this system to it's
full potential!
