Principal's Messages

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES

A. I WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL, RELAXING AND SAFE SPRING BREAK!!! SEE YOU ALL ON MONDAY, APRIL 7!!!

B. AFTER SCHOOL ISSUES: All students (unless parentally supervised) are to be off campus by 3:00 PM. Because there is no adult supervision before or after these times, there can be no exceptions. Students still on campus after 3:00 PM will be brought to the office and parents called to pick them up. The school cannot take on the liability of having unsupervised students playing on the yard after school. If you have daycare needs, please take advantage of the private daycare facility on site: the Springhill KID's HIDEOUT at 283-7808. If you have business on campus after school, DO NOT send your child to the yard to play unless you are willing to supervise your child and ONLY your child. Thank you for your understanding and support.

C. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED LAST SATURDAY's PFC PARENT PARTY/AUCTION. Thanks especially to Stri & Larry Zulch who chaired and coordinated the many facets of this fantastic evening; our MC, Bob Marrone; our Silent Auction Auctioneer, Mr. Jack McCarthy; volunteer extraordinaire, Diana Mezetz; all members of OPM, our musical entertainment for the night; and all other volunteers who made the evening so special! Thank you all so much!!!

D. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER

* Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mrs. Churchill's second grade classroom, the students participate in book clubs. This allows the students to choose a book they are interested in. They read it during class and participate in discussions with small groups; just like an adult book group. The children are able to self- select their books and the culminating activity at the end of the book club.

*Differentiated Instruction is not individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER

Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. RAISING FUNDS FOR THE SOTUBA SCHOOL IN MALI, WEST AFRICA: Thank you to the Student Council and to all who participated in the QUENCHERS fund raiser yesterday, Thursday, March 27, to address school supplies (especially desks!) for the school in the village of Sotuba, outside of Bamako, Mali, in West Africa. Thank you to the Candell family for sharing their pictures and inspiring words about Sotuba at Spirit Wednesday! Paying it Forward at Springhill School is local and global! Keep up the great work!

2. PENNIES FOR PATIENTS: We are extending up our annual Pennies for Patients drive to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society one more week! Final coins will be collected on the Friday of our return from Spring Break, April 11! Leave that spare change in the collection box in each classroom and help find a cure for Leukemia & Lymphoma!!!

3. THANK YOU TO MRS. JARVIS' 2nd GRADE for their Pay It Forward efforts at providing "Bunny Bags" (bags with very special eggs containing positive and inspiring words) for the Woodlands Nursing Home. They were delivered last week and were much appreciated by the residents! Well done, 2nd graders- -- way to pay it forward!!!

Phonathon News!!!

Donate Early and Avoid the Call: As Lafayette's school districts face extreme budget reductions, LASF plays a vital role in ensuring the continuation of our ongoing academic programs that are essential to giving our children the well-rounded education they so deserve.

There are several ways to contribute to the cause:

1. Make your pledge and payment online at www.lasf.org by April 25th.
2. Make your pledge at school during Donation Day on Tuesday, April 22nd (see info below)
3. Mail your pledge directly to LASF at P.O. Box 923, Lafayette, CA 94549 by April 25th.

All three of the above will eliminate your receiving a phone call soliciting a donation.

Or, you may offer your contribution when contacted by LASF volunteers during our annual Phonathon (April 27th through May 6th).

Donation Day: Bring your donation to school on April 22nd and not only will you avoid the follow-up phone call by LASF volunteers, but your child will also receive a free book at Bargain Book Bonanza! Look for more information to follow in your child's Friday Folder.

Volunteers Needed: We urge you to consider donating just a few hours of your time to help in this worthy cause. This is it - the major fundraising event for LASF so that it can fund programs for the 2008-2009 school year. We need your help to make it happen. Please email or call Springhill's LASF fundraising representative, Julie Novak at thenovaks@sbcglobal.net or 930-9435.

This Week at the Library

This Week in the Library
Thank you, thank you! I want to begin with a thank you to all of you who purchased books by Mark Teague when he visited Springhill last week. I got a credit from the Storyteller for $111.00 for our library! That's enough to buy several new books. Also a big thanks goes to those of you who donated money to the library at the Springhill Parent Party. I received a check for $70.00, which will allow me to buy some fun holiday bookmarks for two holidays and keep two magazine subscriptions that I would have had to cancel. I am so grateful for your generosity and I know that our teachers and students are too.

Ta-dah! Let's have a drum roll for the CYRM winners here at Springhill.
Primary - - - - - - - - - - - Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi
Picture Books for Older Readers - - - - - - - - - - Mr. Maxwell's Mouse by Frank Asch
To find out more about CYRM visit their website athttp://californiayoungreadermedal.org/. Statewide winners will be announced in May.

Did you know that the spadefoot toad spends most of its year in its underground burrow but when it hears and feels the vibrations of heavy rainfall it digs out of its underground home? Kindergartners are learning about amphibians so Gail Sayre's book Dig, Wait, Listen A Desert Toad's Tale is a perfect read. Not only did students learn about the spadefoot toad, they also learned about its desert neighbors and the sounds the toad listens to. Ask your kindergartner which sound she remembers and what made it.

March is the month we focus on women's history and celebrate the amazing things that so many women, often unsung, have done throughout history. For example, did you know that it was a woman who set the first American nonstop cross-country flying record back in 1916? First graders heard Ruth Law Thrills a Nation, the story of that record-breaking flight. Ask your first grader if she succeeded in doing what she set out to do.

Lighthouses have helped vessels at sea for hundreds of years, warning sailors of coastal dangers, especially during terrible storms or heavy fogs, and saving many lives. Until recently, lighthouses were manned by keepers who had to keep the lights lit and clean without the help of electricity, radar, or radio. Imagine a huge storm off the rocky coast of Maine in 1856 and a lighthouse keeper who had left to get supplies and oil for the lamps. Now imagine his young daughter left in charge because her mother was ill. This is the exciting, and true, story of Abbie Burgess, called Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie. Ask your second grader what he thinks might have been most frightening for Abbie during her long ordeal.

Third, fourth, and fifth graders worked on almanac lessons this week. We reviewed what information is in an almanac and how you use an index to locate what you are looking for. These lessons help our students to learn not only about almanacs but also how to read a question carefully to find out what they need to answer, how to determine which words in the question are the keywords to use in their search, how to decide whether they need to use a more specific or a more general term to locate information, and how to skim and scan text to find the answer they are looking for. These skills are useful for test taking as well as for research.

New Books in the Library
Have you ever wondered why we seem to hear about whales being stranded more often than we used to? The Whale Scientists: Solving the Mystery of Whale Strandingsby Fran Hodgkins follows the work of scientists trying to determine if weather, the activity of the sun, man-made noises or other factors might play a role in this life-threatening behavior. Meticulously researched, this book includes lots of photographs, a glossary, a list of sources, and resources for further investigation. It's a fascinating read!

Happy Birthday to our Author of the Week!
Dick King-Smith was born on March 27 in Gloucestershire, England. A farmer for many years, his books are often about animals: "farmyard fantasy", as he likes to call it. King- Smith enjoys writing for children, meeting the children who read his books, and knowing that they enjoy his work. Among his many titles are Babe: the Gallant Pig; Martin's Mice; The Toby Man; The Water Horse; and Lady Lollypop. You can check out all of these and many others either here or at the public library.

Legislative Rep Report

We must let our officials know that funding education is a priority to us. Education is the key to our future. Letters are a way to express our concerns. We've passed out over 300 sets of letters. These letters must be turned in the office by 9 AM April 7th to be hand delivered that week. If you haven't already signed and handed in your signed letters please make sure you hand them in by 9 AM April 7th. Please get every concerned potential voter you know to sign a set of letters; one needn't have a student to share our concern about proper education funding.

Copies of the letters are in my box in the office or you can download them at:

Wellness Corner

Easter is over but chances are, the chocolate is far from gone!

Some tips for curbing chocolate cravings. Is it too late with Spring Break here this weekend? Help, I love chocolate!

*Eat something that really doesn't go with chocolate. Like something garlicky. Or a dill pickle.
*Fulfill your craving in a healthy way with, say, a small glass of low-fat chocolate milk or hot cocoa.
*Do something else, such as taking a walk. It will take your mind of the sweet stuff.
*Hide it. Or, if worst comes to worst, throw it in the trash. Still tempted? Head over to Diet Blog for some more tips, and make sure to share some of your own!

Here is more information on how to curb the sweet tooth!http://www.thatsfit.com/2008/03/26/some-tips-for- curbing- chocolate-cravings/
