Principal's Messages
A. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN LAST SATURDAY's PFC RUMMAGE SALE. Thanks especially to Karen Williams and Shelli Shepherd whose tireless efforts resulted in such a successful event. Thank you all so much!!!

B. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mr. Begg's 4th grade, students are engaged in the Tom Snyder math series Fizz and Martina which teaches varied approaches to problem solving, moving from the concrete to the abstract using cooperative group strategies planned and carried out by cooperative teams using language based presentations of operations. This program builds skills in identifying the problem, encoding an equation, and applying the algorithms to solve them. Students internalize the processes at their own level, articulating their understanding in many ways, by listening, reading, recording, writing sentences, and showing their computational work. They collaborate in small groups and share a group accountability for explaining solutions to the whole class.

*Differentiated Instruction is NOT individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. Battery Recycling for Earth Week April 21st- 25th. Did you know that you should NOT throw away used-up batteries into your household waste? Did you know that Contra Costa County is accepting single-use batteries for recycling? For the benefit of Springhill families, we will take care of your battery waste recycling in celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd. Please drop off any single use non- rechargeable batteries (only AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V, please) in the bin out front of the school from Monday through Friday, April 21st through the 25th. Thank you to Ms. Hirsch's 2nd grade for promoting this great cause!

PFC President's Message
TGIF!! The PFC would like to give a big "Thank You" to Shelli Shepherd and Karen Williams for coordinating last weekend's Rummage Sale, a well-attended and profitable event.

7. Sign-up for E-Scrip. It takes only a minute, and is the easiest way to help! Contact Sue Thoren at sthoren2@yahoo.com with any questions.

LASF Corner/ Spring Phonathon and Donation Day

LASF's mission: "To support and enrich the education of every child in the Lafayette public schools through a broad community-based effort."

LASF Corner/Spring Phonathon and Donation Day

This year, LASF has committed almost $1.3 million to the school districts we serve! Now, more than ever, we need the support of our parents, businesses, and the community-at-large. Please help us achieve our goals!

Parents are encouraged to bring their donation to school to avoid the follow-up phone call by LASF volunteers. To get the Springhill children involved, if your family pledge is made by April 22nd, we are giving each child in your family a ticket which can be redeemed for their book of choice at Bargain Book Bonanza. Don't let your child miss out!!!

WE NEED CALLERS FOR THE LASF PHONATHON - Did you know that almost half of the LASF annual budget is raised by parent donations at the annual Spring Phonathon? You can make a difference to our children's education by just donating a couple of hours. Sign up now!

This Week in the Library
The Friends of the Lafayette Library Bookmark Contest award ceremony was held at the Lafayette Public Library this past Tuesday. Not only did Henry Plumb receive the first grade award, but Lia White in Mr. Anke's fourth grade class was named to the Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Lia and Henry! The winners at all grade levels are posted on the library door.

What do a chick, a boy, and a clutch of eggs have in common? Ask your kindergartner to tell you how The Surprise Family brings these seemingly disparate things together.

Have you ever wondered how animals see the earth? Crocodile Smile is a book of songs in animals' voices illustrated by Lois Ehlert. First graders heard a komodo dragon declaring that he'd never eaten a princess, a Galapagos tortoise reminding us to slow down, and a panda hearing its bamboo thicket being cut down. As a special treat, we listened to Sarah Weeks, the author, sing two of the songs.

How many of you remember Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle collaborated once again on Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? Each of the animals they mention is either threatened or endangered. Second graders learned the current status of these animals and used a giant map to see where they live (and hopefully will continue to live).

Imagine finding a forest paradise and settling there. Then imagine that more and more people discover your paradise and before you know it the things you loved have been destroyed and a city stands where the forest once was. As disenchanted people move to more attractive places you're left with. Ask your third grader what happened next to Uno's dream forest in the book Uno's Garden.

Did you know that pastels were mentioned by Da Vinci in 1495 and were commonly used by European artists in the 1800s? Fourth graders shared their experiences of working with pastels and then looked at books illustrated with this medium. They also heard the opening chapters of the first book in The Five Ancestors series, Tiger. Five young monks living in a secret Chinese temple have been hidden by their Grandmaster when their monastery is attacked and destroyed. Each book in the series follows what happens through the eyes of one of the young monks. Why was the monastery destroyed? Why were they saved? What are they meant to do? The author of this series, Jeff Stone, will be coming to talk to our fourth and fifth graders on the afternoon of May 5.

How do you define genre and why should you know what it means? Fifth graders reviewed different genres and then heard the opening chapters of Jeff Stone's Tiger, the first book in The Five Ancestors series to prepare for Mr. Stone's visit here on May 5.

New Books in the Library
Looking for a way to celebrate National Poetry Month? Jack Prelutsky, the first Children's Poet Laureate, has written more than 50 books of poetry for children. He seems to have an innate understanding of how they feel about everyday happenings in their lives and is able to put that understanding into poetry that children enjoy. His latest book is My Dog May Be a Genius, illustrated with simple pen and ink sketches by James Stevenson. The poems range from clever wordplays to concrete poems to poems about unusual creatures like the "snabbit". Dip into Mr. Prelutsky's book and see what you find. Hint: keep an eye out for the underwater marching band!

Happy Birthday to our Author/Illustrator of the Week!
Jon Agee was born on April 19. He grew up in Nyack, NY and discovered his talent for art when he was still a child. After graduating from the Cooper Union School of Art in NYC he wrote a story for kids to go with some of his pictures and his career was born. His most recent works have been those in a series he describes as "offbeat wordplay books", focusing on anagrams ( Elvis Lives!); palindromes (Go Hang a Salami! I'm a Lasagna Hog; Sit on a Potato Pan Otis); and spoonerisms ( Smart Feller) You can check out these and many other books written and/or illustrated by Mr. Agee either here or at the public library.
