Principal's Messages

A. DEAR PARENTS: If there is the possibility that your child(ren) will not be attending Springhill School next year (with the exception of current 5th graders) due to moving or attendance at a private school, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible to assist us in planning for the 2007-2008 school year. Many thanks!

B. PLACEMENT INPUT: Today you received a letter and form outlining the process for providing relevant input for your child's placement for the 2008- 2009 school year. It is neither required nor suggested that you provide this information; if, however, you feel that your child has special needs that should to be considered for placement, please feel free to utilize this process. Please read the policy and procedure carefully and return the form to your child's current teacher by Friday, May 16. Thank you.

C. ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH to the PFC and to Dianne MacArthur for the exceptional gourmet Teacher Appreciation Luncheon last week. As always, it was unbelievably delicious and greatly appreciated!!!

D. POETS IN THE SCHOOL for 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades has begun! Many thanks to PFC for sponsoring this valuable program benefitting Springhill School for over eight years now! Thank you, PFC!!!

E. STAR TESTING DATES & OTHER INFORMATION FOR THIS YEAR:
1. 4th Grade STAR WRITING TEST: Took place on Tuesday, March 4;
2. 2nd-5th Grade STAR TESTING: Monday, May 5-Monday, May 12
3. To ensure optimum results during STAR TESTING, we ask that:
a. Students arrive at school on time;
b. Students have a good night's sleep and nutritious breakfast before school;
c. All dental and doctor appointments be arranged for the afternoon or another day.
d. Parents promote and maintain an atmosphere of calm and absence of stress for your children during this time. State Standardized Testing is NOT the "be-all" and "end-all" of your child's education! Thank you.
4. Questions about the STAR Program also can be directed to Ms. Rachel Zinn, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for our school district. She can be reached at (925) 284-7011.

F. THANK YOU TO ALL THE KINDERGARTEN FAMILY & FRIENDS who attended Wednesday's KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE. It was a phenomenal turnout for a very exciting and positive evening. Thank you, K teachers & parents!!!

G. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER

*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mrs. Finta's 1st grade, a nonfiction reading program called Read Naturally is utilized. These nonfiction pieces are leveled from 1st grade up to 6th grade. Readers are placed at the appropriate story level and, after completing the story, comprehension questions are asked of the child.

*Differentiated Instruction is NOT individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER

Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you. Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUR BATTERY RECYCLE PROJECT DURING EARTH WEEK!!! The response was overwhelming. More batteries were turned in than Quan and all of us could carry at one time!!! Well done, Springhill community--- We are Paying It Forward once again. Thank you especially to Ms. Sharon Kidd and to Ms. Hirsch's 2nd grade for promoting this worthy Pay It Forward opportunity!

2. STUDENT COUNCIL QUENCHERS SALE : Our annual fund raiser to benefit the National Brain Tumor Foundation in memory of former Springhill student, Zane Melmed, will take place this Thursday, May 8,. Order forms are going home today! We have several other former students currently afflicted with brain tumors. For those wishing to contribute to the NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION further, please be aware that the NBTF Angel Adventure Walk will take place in San Francisco on Saturday, May 3. For further information, contact: logsdon@braintumor.org Thank you.

3. THANK YOU TO TWO OF OUR SELFLESS 4th GRADERS, Max Motley & Nic Warren, who consistently volunteer in Room 3, Mrs. Kelley's Special Day Class, where they provide friendship and assistance to the students and staff. Although our policy is to keep many such efforts anonymous in the true spirit of Pay It Forward, Max's and Nic's daily endeavors need to be acknowledged! Well done, Max & Nic!

4. ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR WEEKEND EARTH DAY EFFORTS AT SPRINGHILL SCHOOL? As per this week's Spirit Wednesday, we have a student and parent who are attempting to coordinate weekend activities for students/parents to address appropriate ecological and environmental needs at the school (e.g., trash pickup, gardening, etc.). Turn your suggestions for such activities in to the front Office. Many thanks!

PFC President's Message

May is here, and while the April showers never came the May flowers are all around!!

We are in the home stretch, and it seems to be a very busy time for all, especially with next week's Star Testing and Teacher Appreciation. Though there are several fun celebrations planned to honor our teachers, a friendly "thank you" and "we appreciate all that you do" is a simple, yet important way to show our Springhill staff how much they mean to us. The Teacher Appreciation Luncheon will be held next Wednesday in the Multi-Purpose Room for teachers & staff. Many thanks to Joni Avery and the scores of volunteers who have been coordinating a feast to be enjoyed by all.

Thank you to the parent volunteers who quickly stepped up to work on the sub-committee formed by the PFC to research fund allocations. We are getting started next week with an aggressive agenda to accomplish.

The PFC still needs you!! We are searching for a VP of Communications as well as a Yearbook Chairperson(s) just to name two of the spots that are still open. Please contact Beth Brown at pfcpres@yahoo.com for more information.

ÁFeliz Cinco de Mayo!

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR "THE MAGIC TICKET!"
As a reminder, all children whose families donated prior to the start the Phonathon are eligible for a "book of their choice" from the upcoming Bargain Book Bonanza happening this Tuesday, May 6th! Springhill Library
Fourth and fifth graders are all excited by the upcoming visit of author Jeff Stone. Mr. Stone will be here at Springhill Monday (May 5) to share some of his experiences in writing and to talk about his popular series, The Five Ancestors. The fifth book in the series, Eagle, has just been published and we're all eager to hear more about it.

How could one small girl help thousands of beluga whales that are trapped in an ice hole in the Arctic? Ask your kindergartner what Pipaluk did in John Himmelman's book,Pipaluk and the Whales. The story is based on an incident that actually happened in 1984.

First graders got a chance to show off their reading skills, discover some new books, summarize a story for me, and entertain a classmate by reading in pairs this week. I chose books at different reading levels and put several on each library table, allowing pairs to pick the book they wanted to read. The first graders then took turns reading pages to one another. What a thrill it was to hear their voices as they shared stories with one another!

Second graders continued learning how to use the OPAC stations. This week they learned how to do an author search. Ask your second grader about the most important thing to remember (hint: last name first).

Third through fifth graders reviewed library terminology.

Fourth graders also completed a library terms sheet and also learned about Boolean searches.

Fifth graders learned about the importance of citing a book and an encyclopedia for a bibliography (works cited). They reviewed what information was needed and where to find it, and then, following a sample, wrote a citation for the book they were using for practice. I also shared the citation sheets used at Stanley, which are in different colors depending on the type of resource students are citing. While I know that there are several bibliography tools on the internet, it's important for students to understand the rationale behind and the process of making citations.

New Books in the Library
Take several well-known fairy tale characters. Tell each of their stories backwards (with some updated details) until the point where they meet another character. Mix well and you have Previously by Allan Ahlberg, with illustrations by Bruce Ingman. Previously this team created The Runaway Dinner.

Happy Birthday to our Author of the Week!
Susan Shreve was born on May 2. She founded the MFA program in Creative Writing at George Mason University and has served as a Professor at George Washington University, Bennington College, Princeton University and Columbia University. Shreve has written for both adults and children. Her books for young readers are a blend of humor and poignancy; her stories often depict a character's coming of age under difficult circumstances. Among the books she has written are: The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates, Jonah the Whale, and Tripping over the Lunch Lady: and Other School Stories. You can check out these and many other books written by Ms. Shreve either here or at the public library.
