Principal's Messages

A. DEAR PARENTS: If there is the possibility that your child(ren) will not be attending Springhill School next year (with the exception of current 5th graders) due to moving or attendance at a private school, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible to assist us in planning for the 2008-2009 school year. Many thanks!

B. PLACEMENT INPUT: Last week you received a letter and form outlining the process for providing relevant input for your child's placement for the 2008-2009 school year. It is neither required nor suggested that you provide this information; if, however, you feel that your child has special needs that should to be considered for placement, please feel free to utilize this process. Please read the policy and procedure carefully and return the form to your child's current teacher by Friday, May 16. Thank you.

C. THANK YOU SO MUCH to the PFC and to Joni Avery and her scores of volunteers for the DAY OF THE TEACHER luncheon last Wednesday. Thank you also to Darcy Cole who arranged Yard Duty for an hour, allowing all of our teachers and aides to attend. The meal was unbelievably delicious and greatly appreciated by all the staff as were all of the gracious acknowledgments and generous gifts from the PFC!!!

D. THANK YOU TO ALL THE KINDERGARTEN FAMILY & FRIENDS who attended last Wednesday's KINDERGARTEN OPEN HOUSE. It was a phenomenal turnout for a very exciting and positive evening. Thank you, K teachers & parents!!!

E. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Ms. Hirsch's 2nd grade, the children take a spelling pretest on Monday and then are given a spelling packet for the week based on this assessment. The Accelerated Spelling program is used by students on the computer and a variety of center activities are utilized to continue to enrich these lessons.

*Differentiated Instruction is NOT individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. STUDENT COUNCIL QUENCHERS SALE : Our annual fund raiser to benefit the National Brain Tumor Foundation in memory of former Springhill student, Zane Melmed, took place yesterday, May 8. We also have several other former students currently afflicted with brain tumors whom we hope to benefit with this effort. For those wishing to contribute to the NATIONAL BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION further, check out information at: logsdon@braintumor.org Thank you all for helping to find a cure for brain cancer.

3. THANK YOU TO TWO OF OUR SELFLESS 4th GRADERS, Max Motley & Nic Warren, who consistently volunteer in Room 3, Mrs. Kelley's Special Day Class, where they provide friendship and assistance to the students and staff. Although our policy is to keep many such efforts anonymous in the true spirit of Pay It Forward, Max's and Nic's daily endeavors need to be acknowledged! Well done, Max & Nic!

4. ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR WEEKEND EARTH DAY EFFORTS AT SPRINGHILL SCHOOL? As per last week's Spirit Wednesday, we have a student and parent who are attempting to coordinate weekend activities for students/parents to address appropriate ecological and environmental needs at the school (e.g., trash pickup, gardening, etc.). Turn your suggestions for such activities in to the front Office. Many thanks!

5. TRUST IN EDUCATION/CHANGE FOR CHANGE: Mr. Budd MacKenzie will be returning soon from Afghanistan and will show our 4th and 5th graders what a difference Springhill School's efforts have made in the last five years for the school and the community of Lalander, Afghanistan. Soon we will begin our CHANGE FOR CHANGE drive and continue to make a positive difference for Lalander!!! Thank you.

PFC President's Message

What a busy, busy week we have had! A very big thank you goes to Joni Avery for coordinating this year's Teacher Appreciation Luncheon as well as the numerous volunteers that brought in savory salads and scrumptious desserts. Thank you to Darci Cole also for coordinating the playground volunteers while the Teachers enjoyed their lunch. And a final thank you to the many, many parents who took the time for coffee, lunch & flower deliveries as well as other special treats to show their gratitude to our wonderful teachers.

Star testing is almost over and the teachers and students alike are looking forward to getting back to their regular routine. Give those brains a rest this weekend.

Onto next week! We are kicking the week off with the 5th grade play on Monday and Tuesday nights. I hope you have your tickets!! This Week at the Library

The California Young Reader Medal winners for 2007- 2008 were announced on May 1. Springhill readers were right on in the Picture Books for Older Readers and Intermediate categories. However, our choice in the Primary category was Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies by Carolyn Crimi.
Congratulations to all the winners!
Primary Dex: the Heart of a Hero by Caralyn Buehner
Picture Books for Older Readers Mr. Maxwell's Mouse by Frank Asch
Intermediate Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles

Author Jeff Stone's Springhill visit on Monday was "wildly" successful. Not only did he share some of his personal life experiences and how he tied them into his writing, but he also told us about his characters and how they are continuing to develop and reveal themselves as the Five Ancestors series grows. He told us that he had always planned to write seven books, each from the viewpoint of one of the main characters. At his editor's suggestion, he made some major changes to the last few chapters of Eagle, his most recent book, just as it was ready to go to print. These changes were to build up a character he had just introduced so that that character can carry the story forward in the next book. Finally, to our students' delight, he and 8-10 students selected to demonstrate each style showed some of the animal kung fu styles he has written about. The afternoon was certainly a nice break from STAR testing for our fourth and fifth graders! Mr. Stone suggested two websites you might want to explore with your students:
http://www.readjeffstone.com
http://randomhouse.com/kids/fiveancestors.
Note the Storyteller Bookstore in one of the pictures on the first site. Once again, many thanks to the Storyteller Bookstore for making Jeff Stone's visit possible. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful resource right here in Lafayette!

Do you know what a kookaburra's habitat is? How about an emerald tree boa's? Kindergartners learned about where these and many other animals around the world live in Steve Jenkins' and Robin Page's book, I See a Kookaburra! Ask your kindergartner which habitat he especially likes.

How do you explain time so that a child begins to understand it? Hazel Hutchins uses everyday events in a child's life to help children understand. A hiccup, hops, growing taller, and many other things are part of telling time in A Second Is a Hiccup. In honor of Mother's Day, ask your first grader how long it takes to kiss your mom.

Trixie is taking her unique friend Knuffle Bunny to school to show her class. But Sonja has a Knuffle Bunny, too! Ask your second grader how the two young girls deal with the resulting confusion and mix-up in Mo Willem's Caldecott Honor book, Knuffle Bunny Too. We also talked about the Caldecott, an award given for the art in children's books and looked at this year's winner, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

Tall tales are a beloved part of traditional literature and especially fun to share with students. In a tale from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Beatrice and her mother are desperately need money to buy food. Beatrice decides to go to the large giant who lives in their area and win some of his gold. Can one small girl defeat one very large giant? Ask your third grader what Beatrice does in the tall tale Clever Beatrice, by Margaret Willey.

Did you know that digital art is becoming more and more a part of children's picture books? Illustrators are using computer graphics, and/or working with programs such as Freehand, Adobe PhotoShop, and Paint Shop Pro. Fourth graders shared their experiences of working with programs such as Kid Pix and then looked at books illustrated with this medium. We also looked at some samples of books illustrated in mixed media. Sometimes illustrators use different media to create a certain look, sometimes they use it to distinguish voices or to show readers different events happening at the same time. We finished by reading Paul Brett Johnson's and Celeste Lewis's book Lost. Ask your fourth grader how Mr. Johnson uses mixed media to help tell his story.

Imagine wanting your freedom so much that you mail yourself from Richmond, VA to Philadelphia, PA. You will make this terrifying and painful 350-mile journey with only a little water, a few crackers, and a small tool to make some airholes in the crate. If you are caught, you will be returned to your master and severely punished. Ms. Hungerford's class looked at this year's Caldecott winner and honor books as well as this year's Newbery winner (best writing in a children's book), Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! by Laura Amy Schlitz and then heard the Caldecott honor book, Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine, with illustrations by Kadir Nelson. This powerful story is based on a real life incident from 1849.

New Books in the Library
Winter's crispness, spring's soft bursts of color, summer's bounty, and fall's rich colors. Poet Patricia Thomas and artist Craig Orback have created a beautiful book, Nature's Paintbox, which captures each season's essence with carefully crafted poems and illustrations that use a different medium to differentiate each season.

Happy Birthday to our Author/Illustrator of the Week!
Doug Cushman was born on May 4. He's been writing and/or illustrating children's books since 1978. Mr. Cushman has worked on more than 100 books and has received a number of honors for his work. Among the books he has illustrated are What Time Is It, Mr. Crocodile?, What Teachers Can't Do, and The Bear Upstairs. Some books he has written and illustrated are Mystery at the Club Sandwich, and the Aunt Eater series. You can check out these and many other books written and/or illustrated by Mr. Cushman either here or at the public library.
