A. HAVE A RELAXING AND SAFE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!!

B. SOLAR ENERGY: I am happy to announce that the Lafayette School Board has approved a Power Purchase Agreement with the firm SOLAR MONKEY to provide solar energy at four of the district's five school sites. Springhill School will be the first school to receive solar panels, starting this summer! Thank you to those community members who made this happen, including Leon and Marion Lee, Kim Brast, Kathy Hemmenway and Corrine Christensen! Go Green, Go Springhill!!!

C. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL 5TH GRADE ACTORS & ACTRESSES in the magnificent play, "THE MUSIC MAN"! What extraordinary talent we have in the Springhill community. Both casts were brilliant!!! Many thanks to Mrs. Kristi Buck, Mrs. Kathy Biro, Student Director (and former Springhill student) Madison Gerringer, Directors Joel Roster & Emily Garcia and all other parent volunteers for such a marvelous production! Well done!!!

D. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO ATTENDED OUR Gr. 1-5 OPEN HOUSE! We had a great evening of showing off our school and showcasing our students last Thursday! Great job, students and teachers!!! Thanks to all who attended!

E. THANK YOU all for attending Thursday's most successful LASF Art & Music Fair. It's hard to believe the level of talent at Springhill School! A huge THANK YOU to Kerry Bolen, Holly Nolan & Kathy Hamilton for co-charing the event; to the great food team of Jaime Whelehan and her volunteers; and all other volunteers for coordinating and assisting during the Fair! And a job well done by Vicki Ghulam the Upper Grade Girls' & Boys' Chorus and Liz Brummell and the 5th Grade Strings and Band in the Amphitheatre last evening. THANK YOU ALL!!!

F. OCEAN WEEK: Yes, our 15th annual OCEAN WEEK is coming. Once again, we are trying to actually contain the events to a week (6/2- 6/6) and BEACH DAY on Monday, June 9. As in the past, this week is generously sponsored by our PFC-- THANK YOU VERY MUCH! The program includes field trips, on-campus visitations by Lawrence Hall of Science and other institutions, workshops for students, etc. There is more scheduled for this exciting event and you can help! Do you have a certain expertise or collection of articles relating to oceans or waterlife that you would be willing to share, lend or donate to the school? If so, contact your child's teacher or Kim Brast in the school office. Also, there will be a number of activities in which volunteers will be needed!!! Thank you.

G. DEAR PARENTS: If there is the possibility that your child(ren) will not be attending Springhill School next year (with the exception of current 5th graders) due to moving or attendance at a private school, please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible to assist us in planning for the 2008-2009 school year. Many thanks!

H. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mrs. Newcomb's 4th grade, students have the opportunity to take a pretest before starting a new math chapter. If they test out of the math chapter they are given enrichment activities that extend the unit the class is studying.

*Differentiated Instruction is NOT individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. TRUST IN EDUCATION/CHANGE FOR CHANGE: Mr. Budd MacKenzie will be returning soon from Afghanistan and will show our 2nd through 5th graders what a difference Springhill School's efforts have made in the last five years for the school and the community of Lalander, Afghanistan. In lieu of Springhill's annual Change for Change drive to benefit TIE's (Trust in Education) ongoing efforts to bring education, commerce and stability to Lalander, Afghanistan, we are going to attempt to bring about comparable results through our Afghanistan Spring Cleaning drive. Beginning Wednesday, 5/21, and lasting until the final day of school, Thursday, 5/12, we will be collecting a number of items from the students and community to be donated to the citizens of Lalander. Below, please find an extensive list of items that can be donated including clothes, household items and school supplies from students and community and medical supplies from community.

PFC President's Message

Hello, Parents,

I would like to give you an update about something you may have heard circulating within our district. In a collaborative effort, LASF, parent organizations, and both school districts have been meeting regularly to research the development of a fundraising model. The focus of this model will be to increase financial resources to our Lafayette public schools. In this endeavor, LASF will continue to offer its program to our students. Any future proposal for changes to fundraising by LASF and/or the parent organizations will be made after an opportunity for widespread input. If you have any ideas that you would like to contribute, you may contact the Lafayette School Board (lsdboard@lafsd.k12.ca.us) or LASF (office@lasf.org) or Corrine Christensen (joeandcorrine@msn.com).

Have a safe Memorial Day weekend!

LASF Corner

A note from Kathy Hamilton, LASF Springhill K-5 Representative

As the year continues to wind down, I want to take a minute and thank last year's team of LASF chairs and shadows at Springhill: Carol Davis, Rhodora Del Rosario and Sharon Kidd for bringing another enlightening science fair; Bonnie Min for keeping track of those instructors delivering the extra art and science classes to our kids; Shay Kurtz for getting out the announcements to the FF; Meagan Haaglund for putting together our Build It math fair; Holly Nolan and Kerry Bolen for organizing the art and music fair and Julie Mitchell for standing in for allocations.

I also want to thank the individual room representatives for their help in disseminating LASF information to their classrooms and helping out with all the various events on campus. We couldn't do our jobs without you and I hope you will consider being a LASF room rep again next year (- sign up is at Scorpion days) or better yet consider a position on the LASF Team!!!

That being said....

Announcing Springhill's LASF team for the 2008- 2009 school year!

Springhill K-5 Head Rep: Kathy Hamilton

K-5 Head Rep Co -Shadow position: Sally Fonstein and _______________ (open)

Billing: Bonnie Min

Publicity: Shay Kurtz

Art Fair-Co-Chairs: Holly Nolan and Kelly Bolen

Fundraising Co-Chairs: Julie Novak and Laurie Wondolowski

Science Fair Co-Chairs: Sharon Kidd and Rhodora Del Rosario

Science Fair Shadows: Heidi Plumb and Kari Grosz

Next year is my last year at Springhill and I need to have a couple of individuals who are willing to learn the ropes before I leave!! The only pre-requisites are good organizational skills, ability to delegate and and interest in LASF.

Sally Fonstien, a 2nd grade mom has stepped up to take one of the co-shadow openings for the K-5 position (thanks Sally), but we still need someone else to assist. Please contact me if you would like to join Sally and have a voice in how LASF is run!

If there is another position you would like to learn more about feel free to contact me. We are always looking for more people to join the team and have a more active role, especially in the larger chair positions such as fundraising and art fair. Many of the positions can be easily managed by working moms as well as moms with little ones still at home.

For any additional information about the open shadow position please contact Kathy Hamilton at katsvetmail@yahoo.com.

Thanks for a great year!

This Week at the Library

This was the last week of library classes for everyone except the kindergartners. Over the next weeks I'll be gathering in all library books, preparing for inventory, and scanning all 14,300 or so books. Not only does the inventory allow us to catch any mistakes we may have made before I send out final bills, it also helps me determine where I need to buy books to fill in gaps in the collection or to replace missing, dated, and/or worn books. If you have any library books still at home, please send them back as soon as you can.

What do you do when you find a BIGGGG egg that hatches into a dinosaur? Little Grunt and his family decide to keep the dinosaur, whom they name George, but soon it grows too big for their cave. Then disaster strikes! Will the Grunts perish or will George save the day? Ask your kindergartner what George does in Little Grunt and the Big Egg by Tomie dePaola.

Do you remember the old children's song "The Farmer in the Dell"? Imagine one very hungry rat who spots the cheese, standing all alone in the dell, and decides to eat it. There's only one problem-the cat won't let him. He finally convinces the cat only to have the dog appear. Ask your first grader what finally happens in Margie Palatini's The Cheese.

What would it be like to be a kid on a cattle ranch? According to Cattle Kids by Cat Urbigkit, it can be a lot of hard work but it's never boring. The book highlights several families' different operations and shows kids helping out in many ways. This insight into a lifestyle that is so different from most of ours is a real eye opener. Ask your second grader what job looks most interesting.

Have you ever heard about Australian Bill Roycroft? While he was competing in the 1960 Olympics he and his horse crashed during the cross-country part of the three-day event. He was told he couldn't continue due to a broken collarbone and a concussion. But, rather than have his team forfeit, he signed himself out of the hospital, asked his teammates to help him into the saddle, and somehow rode flawlessly to help his team win the gold medal. This is one of several stories in Gold Medal for Weird by Kevin Sylvester, the book I shared with third and fourth graders this week. In both classes we also took time for students to write down some of their favorite titles. Fourth graders also got a detailed look at our Springhill Library website.

What's a favorite book you would recommend to an incoming fifth grader? This was the question that greeted the fifth graders and they took time to note some of their favorites. I'll be compiling these into a list (as well as fourth and third grade recommendations) which I'll post on the library website this summer. We then explored the Springhill Library, Stanley Library, and Contra Costa County Public Library websites, focusing on databases at the latter two sites. For the last minutes of the period I encouraged the students to browse, since it was their last class visit to the Springhill library.

New Books in the Library
We hear a lot about athletes who come home laden with Olympic medals but what about the others? Gold Medal for Weird by Kevin Sylvester is a compilation of stories about those who didn't win, about some of the goofy things that have happened, and about those whose heroism may or may not be known. The selections I shared with the third and fourth graders this week were big hits, so check it out and laugh, shake your head, or maybe even smile proudly as you prepare for this summer's Olympics in Beijing.

Happy Birthday to our Author of the Week!
Susan Cooper was born on May 23 in Britain. While she was working as a reporter, she began to write novels in her spare time. Her fantasy series The Dark Is Rising combines Arthurian elements with original ones to create a haunting adventure. The fourth book in the five part series, The Grey King, won the Newbery Medal in 1976. She has also written The Boggart, and The King of Shadows. You can check out these and many other books by Ms. Cooper either here or at the public library.
