Principal's Messages |
 |
A. THANK YOU to the PFC for everything you
have done for Springhill School this year under the
inspired leadership of Mrs. Corrine Christensen!!!
Thank you to Michelle & Bill Chan for hosting the PFC
Old Board/New Board Dinner and Celebration;
providing such a delicious dinner last Thursday. The
staff (and principal!) had a marvelous time! Thank you
to all parents and students who made this school year
so successful!
B. SOLAR ENERGY: I am happy to
announce that the Lafayette School Board has
approved a Power Purchase Agreement with the firm
SOLAR MONKEY to provide solar energy at four of the
district's five school sites. Springhill School will be
the first school to receive solar panels, starting this
summer! Thank you to those community members
who made this happen, including Leon and Marion
Lee, Kim Brast, Kathy Hemmenway and Corrine
Christensen! Go Green, Go Springhill!!!
C. OCEAN WEEK: Yes, our 15th annual
OCEAN WEEK is coming. Once again, we
are trying to actually contain the events to a week (6/2-
6/6) and BEACH DAY on Monday, June 9. As in the
past, this week is generously sponsored by our PFC--
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! The program includes
field trips, on-campus visitations by Lawrence Hall of
Science and other institutions, workshops for
students, etc. There is more scheduled for this
exciting event and you can help! Do you have a
certain expertise or collection of articles relating to
oceans or waterlife that you would be willing to share,
lend or donate to the school? If so, contact your
child's teacher or Kim Brast in the school office.
Also, there will be a number of activities in which
volunteers will be needed!!! Thank you.
D. DEAR PARENTS: If there is the possibility
that your child(ren) will not be attending Springhill
School next year (with the exception of current 5th
graders) due to moving or attendance at a private
school, please let your child's teacher know as soon
as possible to assist us in planning for the 2008-2009
school year. Many thanks!
E. Join the PFC! Register for e-SCRIP!!
DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of
our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a
particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated
Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss
it!!!
In Mr. Fisher's 5th grade, students engage in "Mystery
Detective". Students are put into pairs. One person is
the detective and one is the problem solver. The
teacher puts a problem on the overhead, the problem
solver puts his/her head down, and the detective
views the problem. Nothing can be written down.
When the overhead is turned off, the detective's job is
to communicate the problem to the problem solver.
The problem solver then attacks the problem and with
the help of the detective attempts to come up with the
solution. Each team writes their answer down on a
paper that is easily visible when held up. In this way
the teacher can constantly assess the status of the
answers and see who is having difficulties.
*Differentiated Instruction is NOT
individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of
curriculum to students in a manner that complements
their learning style while always challenging them at
their ability level.
PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including different aspects of
our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday
Flyer. Character development should be a major
component in any well-rounded educational program
and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your
children what their classes are doing for Pay It
Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every
Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find
out how we promote character development at
Springhill School. We do have a significant change in
the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are
familiar with how this program was originally
designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward"
efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the
altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we
will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the
weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in
the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific
students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the
enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as
strong as it has been the last several years with this
change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!
1. TRUST IN EDUCATION/CHANGE FOR
CHANGE: Mr. Budd MacKenzie will be returning
soon from Afghanistan and will show our 2nd through
5th graders what a difference Springhill School's
efforts have made in the last five years for the school
and the community of Lalander, Afghanistan. In lieu of
Springhill's annual Change for Change drive to benefit
TIE's (Trust in Education) ongoing efforts to bring
education, commerce and stability to Lalander,
Afghanistan, we are going to attempt to bring about
comparable results through our Afghanistan Spring
Cleaning drive. Beginning Wednesday, 5/21, and
lasting until the final day of school, Thursday, 5/12, we
will be collecting a number of items from the students
and community to be donated to the citizens of
Lalander. Below, please find an extensive list of items
that can be donated including clothes, household
items and school supplies from students and

grade. You will see several of them posted
throughout the school. Under the auspices of the
Student Council, Springhill School is asking the

PFC President's Message |
 |
The weeks are flying by, and this one is no exception!!
The annual Old Board/New Board PFC dinner was
held last night at the home of Bill and Michelle Chan:
many thanks to you both for opening your home to
nearly 100 guests! While it was rather chilly outside,
the food was wonderful and enjoyed by all. This event
took place to honor all of the PFC Committee Chairs,
the outgoing 5th grade parents, and the outgoing and
incoming PFC Executive Board. This group of
parents play an integral role in Springhill's ability to
excel in the many ways it does. This past year has
been enriching, meaningful and full of fun, not only for
myself as PFC President, but also for our entire
school community. THANK YOU all for the countless
hours, abounding creativity and phenomenal
dedication you have shared with us!!
We are counting down, only two weeks left!! I know it
seems like mayhem around here but take a moment
to reflect on the past year; it is the makings of
memories for years to come.

A note from Kathy Hamilton
There was an error in last week's Friday Flyer

good organizational skills, ability to delegate and
interest in LASF. Please join Sally and me in

Go fishing for Gold!
The Gold Coast Chamber Players final concert in
2008, Cuisine de Musique, will be Sunday, June 1st at
2pm at St.Mary's College in Moraga. Deemed to
be "Masters of the art of welcoming entertainment",
these esteemed musicians will be presenting a
program which includes one of the most popular
pieces of chamber music, Schubert's "Trout" Quintet.
In addition, Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock for
soprano, clarinet and piano will feature local
superstar clarinetist, Tony Striplen and one of the SF
Opera's top singers, Ji young Yang. As if that's not
enough, these world class musicians are throwing in
the kitchen sink- quite literally by performing Martinu's
Kitchen revue. It's a hilarious piece which includes a
story about a romance between a pot and lid,
complete with intrigue from a dishtowel. Don't miss
this family friendly program minutes from home. For
tickets call the Willows Box Office (925) 798-1300 or
