DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Ms. Spain's 1st grade, differentiation take place within the math curriculum. Math centers allow for students to do tile math and math packets & versatiles. As students work at their own pace, they are allowed to go to the next level as they finish the one they are working on. Some students are working on simple addition problems. Some are ready for word problems and others might be ready for place value and double digit addition.

*Differentiated Instruction is NOT individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School. We do have a significant change in the Pay It Forward program this year. If you are familiar with how this program was originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it forward" efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the altruistic and selfless nature of the act. Although we will acknowledge all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student Bulletin, at Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we will no longer identify the specific students who performed the acts. We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the program will continue to be as strong as it has been the last several years with this change. Thank you.
Keep up that PIF Spirit!!!

1. KEEP PAYING IF FORWARD ALL SUMMER!!!

2. RUN FOR KIERAN: Thank you to the Springhill and greater Lafayette community for their participation in last March's RUN FOR KIERAN. The money raised allowed for one doctor to remain on staff for a year at Stanford Research Center and also provided $6000 for the Springhill Special Education Program. Thank you to the Quinn family and thank you to Kieran, always inspiring us!!!

3. TRUST IN EDUCATION/CHANGE FOR CHANGE
: Mr. Budd MacKenzie will be returning soon from Afghanistan and will show our 2nd through 5th graders what a difference Springhill School's efforts have made in the last five years for the school and the community of Lalander, Afghanistan. In lieu of Springhill's annual Change for Change drive to benefit TIE's (Trust in Education) ongoing efforts to bring education, commerce and stability to Lalander, Afghanistan, we are going to attempt to bring about comparable results through our Afghanistan Spring Cleaning drive. Beginning Wednesday, 5/21, and lasting until the final day of school, Thursday, 5/12, we will be collecting a number of items from the students and community to be donated to the citizens of Lalander. Below, please find an extensive list of items that can be donated including clothes, household items and school supplies from students and community and medical supplies from community.

PFC President's Message

Well, today was the highly anticipated Field Day, an event held for our oldest Scorpions who will be moving on to Stanley soon! Michele Claman- Garza and Roberta Noel worked diligently to rally an army of 5th grade parents who organized a multitude of field games, prepared a satisfying lunch, and created many lasting memories for the kids. Great job, and thanks for kicking off the last 4 1/2 days of events as the kids count down their final days at Springhill.

I would like to give a very heartfelt thank you to this year's Executive Board: Beth Brown, Kathy Hemmenway, Stephanie Marrone, Maria Nelson, Karen Guthrie, Lucie Paladino, Natalie Lane, Diane Wilson, Nancy Newcomb and Bruce Wodhams. Thank you for making a year filled with the unexpected flow as smoothly as possible!!

LASF at Springhill needs you!!

If you like LASF and what it provides for your kids at school, please consider shadowing one of the positions next year. Specifically, we are looking for one additional co-shadow for the K-5 rep position and two co-shadows for the fundraising position.

A co-shadow for the K-5 rep position just needs to have good organizational skills, ability to delegate, and an interest in LASF. Please contact Kathy Hamilton katsvetmail@yahoo.com for more specific information.

Fundraising is a good position for working moms or moms with small children and best shared with two people. Contact Julie Novak thenovaks@sbcglobal.net or Kathy Hamilton katsvetmail@yahoo.com for more information.

Wellness Corner

It's Spring! Kids (and Mom's!) are flipping over flip- flops - are these inexpensive, trendy shoes worth the cost?

What's great about flip-flops:
* The cost (usually, unless they're designer flip-flops)
* Convenience
* Flip flops can help prevent you from getting fungal infections in public gyms, pools and shower facilities.
* Flip flops help prevent you from catching athlete's foot or plantar warts in public showers.

What's NOT great about flip-flops:
* The feet are exposed to dangers such as falling objects, getting stuck in doors, getting bit/stung by insects, stubbing toes, getting sun-burned
* Lack of arch support - heels of your feet absorb more pressure, and also takes a toll on you knees and calf muscles
* Poor traction
* Thin, flexible soles provide little support from stepping on broken glass and sharp objects
* Muscles strain: the way you need to flex your feet to keep flip flops on puts added strain on muscles
* Wearing flip flops too often can actually change the shape of your feet: the bones in your feet can actually spread out.
* Wearing flip flops can change your posture and place more stress on your back
* Increase your risk of tripping causing sprains, and multiple types of injuries from falls
* Wearing flip flops impairs driving safety because they can become lodged under the gas or brake pedal, or your foot can slip out of them

The consequences of flip-flop wear are more profound than just seasonal injuries, and likely contribute to foot, leg, and back pain, even in our students, still considered young! These can lead to chronic and serious disabilities.

There are lots of new fashionable choices in footwear on the market that offer closed-toed styles with good support. Athletic shoes with good support (not Vans) are always a great choice!

Take Action

At this time, there is little to report on the budget. The real story will take place this summer. And while our Legislators currently say they want to retain schools' base funding, that commitment may waver during efforts to balance the budget this summer.

It is essential to keep education funding in the forefront of the budget battles, and that means staying informed while school is out.

If you haven't already, sign up for our Get Smart Newsletter and keep informed:

http://www.lastrampaspta.org/getsmart_dec07.html

A big thanks to all the parents who signed the many letters to the Governor and Legislators, and all those individuals who took time out of their day to show up to many of the rallies. Thanks to the tremendous effort of parents and staff in our school and throughout the state, education's base funding was saved in the May Budget Revise. Thank you!! You've truly made a difference!

Now and throughout the summer, here's an easy way to remind Sacramento that even though school is out, education is still our priority. Share this with friends and family, especially those living in the Central or Imperial Valleys:
