A. RED RIBBON WEEK/NATIONAL CHARACTER
COUNTS WEEK: Check out the calendar for the variety
of activities for Springhill students during this important
character building week that will set the character
expectations for the rest of the year and beyond. Many
thanks to Karen Elliott, Corrine Christensen, Doreen
deRoque and Beth Brown for all of their efforts in putting this
important and beneficial calendar of activities together! Pay It
Forward during Red Ribbon/National Character Counts
Week!!!
B. THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS WHO
PARTICIPATED IN THE SPRINGHILL GARDEN WORKDAYS
last weekend! Great progress was made on our Outdoor
Classroom. A special thank you to Mrs. Kathy Hemmenway,
Mrs. Kim Brast and other volunteers for coordinating this
event and your continuing efforts in making the Springhill
Garden such a glorious reality!!!
C. SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL: Thank you to all
who participated in the School Site Council selection process.
We had a record-setting 125 ballots cast from Springhill
parents. Congratulations to Mrs. Corrine Christensen, Mrs.
Vicki Edwards & Mrs. Jean Follmer , our newly elected parent
representatives to the council. Thank you also to Mrs. Lynda
Rotundo for throwing her hat into the ring in this close
election. Thank you all again.
D. CONGRATULATIONS TO MRS. ERIN

WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF
YOU!!!
E. 5th GRADE PARENTS & STUDENTS:
DEMOCRACY IN ACTION!!! Student Body Elections are
taking place today. Check out the results next week here in
the Friday Flyer!

SCRIP!!
THE SIX PILLARS & PAY IT FORWARD CORNER
CHECK OUT THE SIX PILLARS BANNERS
HANGING IN THE CENTRAL
COURTYARD!
Springhill School has recently sent a team of eight
(four
parents and four staff members, including myself) to
San
Francisco for three days this summer where we were
introduced to an impressive, character development
framework used nationwide known as
CHARACTER
COUNTS! It has an excellent track record
primarily
with
schools, but also with sports organizations,
businesses,
nonprofit institutions, etc. We are eager to share what
we
learned at this workshop with the Springhill
community. As
parents, you will have opportunities to learn much
more about
how we might use CHARACTER COUNTS! as
a
framework for
all that we do at Springhill. Through school
communications,
parent ed presentations from our PFC and your own
children,
you will be kept apprised of this endeavor as the
school year
progresses. CHARACTER COUNTS! is
based on the
Six
Pillars: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility,
Fairness,
Caring and Citizenship. We are enthusiastic about
every
aspect of CHARACTER COUNTS! and are
looking
forward to
introducing its components to the student body.
Because of
the way in which the framework is designed and the
flexibility
with which it can be implemented, it can serve as an
umbrella
under which we will continue our PAY IT FORWARD
program
and our regular SPIRIT WEDNESDAY activities, and,
perhaps,
can create the opportunity for a number of additional
activities.
You will be receiving much more news about
CHARACTER
COUNTS! as the year unfolds, but you may also
access the
following website for more information:
http://charactercounts.org/
Every week we will be including different aspects of
our Pay It
Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer.
Character
development should be a major component in any
well-rounded educational program and it has been for
many years
at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are
doing
for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30
AM every
Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find
out how
we promote character development at Springhill
School.
We made a significant change in the Pay It Forward
program
last year. If you are familiar with how this program was
originally designed, you know that all of the "pay it
forward"
efforts remained anonymous in order to promote the
altruistic
and selfless nature of the act. Although we will
acknowledge
all of the acts themselves in the weekly Student
Bulletin, at
Spirit Wednesday and in the Friday Flyer, we no
longer
identify the specific students who performed the acts
(e.g.,
"Two 2nd graders had a lemonade sale over the
weekend
and raised $30 for the school's Coins For a Cure
Diabetes
Drive.") We are hopeful the enthusiasm for the
program will
continue to be as strong as it has been the last several
years
with this change. Thank you.
A. UPCOMING PAY IT FORWARD
EVENTS:
1. Monday, October 13: COINS FOR A CURE
JUVENILE DIABETES DRIVE BEGINS
2. Walk to Cure Diabetes; Heather Farms,
Sunday,
11/22/08, 10:00 AM
3. Light the Night Leukemia Walk; Civic Park, Walnut Creek,
Saturday, 10/11, 5:30 PM.
B. PAY IT FORWARD: THANK YOU ALL WHO
DONATED TOYS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO THE KIDS
OF CHILDREN's HOSPITAL! WELL DONE SPRINGHILL
SCHOOL STUDENTS AND SPRINGHILL COMMUNITY!!!
WAY TO PAY IT FORWARD!!!
DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of
our classes. Starting this week, we will be profiling a
particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated
Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss
it!!!
In Mr. Anke's 4th grade, students study math facts at their own
individual pace with a variety of activities.
*Differentiated Instruction is NOT
individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of
curriculum to students in a manner that complements
their learning style while always challenging them at
their ability level.

PFC President's Message |
 |
Thank you Kathy Hemmenway, Kim Brast and
all
the volunteers worked in the garden last weekend. We
really appreciate your time and dedication in helping
us
get this outdoor classroom ready for our
children!
David Gerson volunteered to step into the
position
of Treasurer of Budgeting and Reporting and was
voted in
at the Executive Board Meeting on Wednesday night.
Thank you David, and welcome aboard!
We are currently looking for a VP of
Communications
for next year. Sadly, Melissa Johnston is
resigning from her position as she and family are
facing a
move out of state. If you are interested in getting
involved
with the PFC in this capacity, please feel free to give
me a
call.
I want to send a special thanks to all of the candidates
who
ran for the Student Body Officers positions. It's great to
see
that so many kids care about their school and want to
get
involved to make a difference! The election results
will be
out this afternoon. Congratulations to all of
you!
Mark your calendars for Monday, October
13th!
We will be having a Red Ribbon Week
Assembly
in the MP room for our students between 12:45 -
1:45
PM. We will be hosting Ralph The Great
as
he presents The Pro Kids Show, a
motivational
character education program. He uses music, magic,
comedy and student participation to present his
message
of good character qualities and good decision making.
Then, following that same evening, he will be hosting
a
family assembly from 7 - 8 PM. This
show
is different from the school assembly and is targeted
towards families. So bring your whole family and
enjoy a
night of great entertainment!
Lastly, we are still looking for an Earthquake
Preparedness Chair. This position updates all of
the
emergency backpacks located in each classroom with
individual emergency forms, which are turned in
during
Scorpion Days. This person will also be the Liaison
between our school and the Lafayette School District
as
the District is implementing a new Earthquake
Preparedness Program.

Share Your Love on November 15th
Come share your love for local education at LASF's
"Love
Lafayette - Love our Schools" Annual Event. This
year the
event will be held on November 15th at the beautiful
Orinda
Country Club where you will enjoy a night of casino
games, live
music and dancing, one-of-a-kind sign-up parties and
a
fantastic raffle. Watch the mail for a bright yellow
envelope -
your ticket to Lafayette's Love Fest of the year!
Are You New to Lafayette Schools? Meet
LASF!
If your family is attending a Lafayette school for the first
time,
you are just beginning to enjoy the quality
enrichment
education brought to your child by LASF, the
Lafayette Arts
& Science Foundation. This volunteer- and parent-
driven
education foundation provides curriculum and
financial support
in the arts, sciences, technology and beyond for
Lafayette
public school students. You will always know
when your
child has had LASF at school because that is what
they will talk
about when you ask, "How was your day?
"
How does LASF do it? Every year, each Lafayette
school
family is asked to make a donation to help cover the
cost of an
LASF education for each of its school-age children.
For
new families, donations are requested during the
LASF Fall
Phonathon, which runs October 19 - 21st. When
you
receive your call during the Phonathon, please do
your part
and donate the requested $500 per child. Please also
consider
donating your time as a volunteer. Any and all
contributions
are greatly appreciated.

LASF Annual Event |
 |
Friends and Supporters of LASF,
I have been asked by Lafayette Elementary PTA to be
one of
the Liaisons for the Annual LASF event this year,
commonly
known as "Barn Bash" or "Oktoberfest." This year the
goal
will be again to bring the Lafayette Community
together in a
festive, party atmosphere to celebrate the contribution
LASF
has made to the education of our children. The big
difference is that there will not be a Live or Silent
Auction.
Instead, we will have several raffles of varying ticket
prices,
thereby giving everyone the same opportunity to win a
great
prize while still supporting LASFs' fundraising
goals.
This is where you (or someone you know) can play a
role.
We are asking some of those most loyal to LASF and
their
schools to donate wine; three or four, a half case or
MORE
would be great! We are looking for interesting ones,
special
ones, OLD ones. All of these wines will be Auctioned
off
together in either one or two very special "Lots",
depending
on how many bottles we get. Wouldn't it be great to
win
enough wine that you don't have to run out at the last
minute
for every special occasion? How about having a
ready
made "cellar" at your house?
Mark your calendars! The LASF event will be held on
Saturday, November 15th, 2008 at the Orinda
Country Club. We would like to begin
collecting the
wine donations as soon as possible. I have a
Representative from each school you can contact or
call me
directly at (925) 962-1213 or (415) 606-4949 to set up
a
donation pick-up.

This Week in the Library |
 |
Kindergartners are continuing to note the changes that
autumn brings. Our books this week were Autumn:
Signs of the Season Around North America by
Mary
Pat Finnegan, which is a nonfiction book about the
changes fall brings in different regions of our
continent.
We then read Leaves by David Ezra Stein. In
this
short story a young bear cub worries that the trees are
dying when he sees the leaves falling. Last week's
lesson
focused on shapes, using both nonfiction and
fiction.
First graders learned facts about many different kinds
of
seeds and had a chance to study them in detail in Ken
Robbin's beautifully illustrated nonfiction book
Seeds.
Second graders were reminded of signs that autumn
is
here in Chris Van Allsburg's book The Stranger.
Did the stranger bring autumn or was he himself
actually
autumn?
Third graders reviewed the purpose and meaning of
call
numbers last week and then practiced finding books
using
call numbers. This week third and fourth graders
reviewed
the searches they had already learned on the Online
Public Access Catalog (OPAC) search stations in
previous
years and then learned some new ways to search.
Over
the next two to three weeks each student will complete
an
OPAC worksheet. This is part of learning how to locate
the
books they're looking for, even when I'm not available
to
help them.
Fifth graders had their OPAC lesson last week, so our
focus this week was on Banned Book Week. We
discussed what a challenge to a book is, what it
means to
ban a book, some reasons why someone might want
to
ban a book, and what some of the most challenged
and/or
banned books of the past ten years have been. Many
students were surprised to hear that some very well-
known books have been banned in some schools or
communities. Harry Potter, Captain Underpants,
Bridge
to Terabithia, Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories
series, the Goosebumps series, A Wrinkle in
Time, etc. We also talked about the importance of
respecting others' opinions, even when you don't
agree
with them. As you know, Respect is one of the six
pillars in
our Character Counts program. We finished up by
reading Claude Clement's book Musician from the
Darkness, which is set in the days before humans
could speak, and brainstormed ways that you could
communicate with one another without words.
Don't forget to check out our website at
http://www.lafsd.k12.ca.us/people/smattern/index.htm.
You
can find monthly updates on what's happening at the
Springhill Library, an updated library wish list, reviews
of
new books, and links to many helpful resources on the
website, too.
Remember, there are over 100 reasons to read. This
week, it's "You'll learn about the world."

Measure E, Q & A |
 |
Ballot Measure E, Your Questions Answered
(Acalanes Union High School District Facilities
Improvement Bond)
Q. As a parent at Springhill Elementary, why
should I
care?
A. For the parents of fifth graders, for example,
Measure
E will improve high schools that your children will be
attending in 4 short years.
Q. What would Measure E do for our high
schools?
A. Measure E will provide necessary funding to
renovate,
repair, and maintain our local high schools, all of
which
were built between 1940 and 1961. Infrastructure
needs
include items such as replacing water and gas mains,
updating electrical circuitry and repairing or replacing
roofs.
Q. What will happen if Measure E doesn't pass?
A. If Measure E doesn't pass the governing board will
look at a number of stop-gap measures. Ultimately,
cuts
will have to be made, either to classroom programs or
facility usage. Either way, the cuts will shortchange
students and erode the community's past investment
in
our schools. The District continues to rank as the
highest performing California high school district
based
on the 2008 Academic Performance Index
(API).
Q. Why is the district using bonds to fund the
projects?
A. Major facility-related projects typically require a
large
sum of money up front, making it infeasible to rely on
annual operating funds or parcel tax revenue. None
of
the money raised by Measure E would be used for
teachers' salaries.
Q. When would work begin?
A. If Measure E passes, work on the technology
component will begin in the spring of 2009. It is
anticipated that most of the major facilities projects will
begin in 2010, once bids are received and final plans
have been approved.
Q. What about funding from the State Lottery?
A. The money received from the State Lottery
accounts for only 1.8% of the district's budget and
those funds are used for annual operating
expenses.
Please be aware that the deadline for registering
to
vote in this November's election is October 20.
For
further information or to volunteer, go to
www.aboutMeasureE.org.

Bullying is a serious problem in our schools today and
is not just an unpleasant rite of passage for our
children. The affects of bullying can be detrimental to a
child's self-esteem, social and academic success.

and how you can support and empower your child to
develop bully resistance skills. Also, learn ways to

Thinking Strategies: A Special Evening for
Parents
Parents... Please join us for an evening with Thinking
Strategies Coach and Expert Dina Macdonald.
Tuesday, October 14, 2008, Stanley Middle School
Library, 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
This evening is about what it means to understand. It's
about how we use books and language to discover,
alongside children, the power of the human intellect. It
is about focusing on what matters most in literacy
teaching rather than teaching a little of this, a little of
that, until we've squandered every opportunity for
children to explore ideas in depth. It is about learning
from intellectual mentors whose lives provide insight
and direction for a nation of young scholars. This
evening is about capturing the essence of
understanding and bringing it to life in our own and
our
children's hearts and minds. This evening is about
what it means to understand.
Please note: This is a repeat of last April's session.
Look for Session 2 coming this winter!
