THE SIX PILLARS & PAY IT FORWARD CORNER

"That you may retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the people by doing what you know is right, than to temporarily please them by doing what you know is wrong"
--William J. H. Boetcker

CHARACTER COUNTS! AS YOU GO FORWARD DAILY, STAND TALL UPON THE PILLARS OF TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING & CITIZENSHIP!!!

Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School.

A. THANK YOU TO STUDENT COUNCIL FOR THE PURCHASE OF THE GARDEN GREEN HOUSE. WELL DONE!!! Thank you, Student Council, for Paying It Forward and for supporting the Pillar of Responsibility & Citizenship!

B. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART THIS YEAR AT SPRINGHILL SCHOOL COLLECTED $7,234 FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION!!! WELL DONE, SCORPIONS!!!

C. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES, WINTER WEAR AND SUPPORT FOR SPONSORING AFGHAN STUDENTS. YES, OUR ANNUAL CHANGE FOR CHANGE DRIVE HAS CHANGED!! This year we are striving to aid our Sister City of Lalander, Afghanistan, by pursuing the following Pay It Forward efforts:
1. COLLECTING SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR THE SCHOOL IN LALANDER: Pencils, pens, rulers, paper, notebooks, compasses, protractors, etc., can all be placed in the collection box in front of the school starting next Monday, 5/18;
2. COLLECTING WINTER CLOTHING: Blankets, bedding, jackets, caps, etc., can all be placed in the collection box in front of the school starting next Monday, 5/18;
3. SPONSOR AN AFGHAN STREET CHILD TO GO TO SCHOOL: For only $260 a year, Springhill School can sponsor an Afghan street child to go to school for a year. Each grade level is pursuing this drive. Please consider sending in a check for $15 (or more!) to the school with your child made out to TRUST IN EDUCATION (TIE)!
All of these rts are under the auspices of TIE (Trust In Education), an organization founded by Lafayette's own Budd MacKenzie who is speaking to our 4th & 5th graders today about his most recent trip to Lalander where our donations help the students and the businesses with a grass roots effort of aid. Again, thank you for supporting this important work under the Pillar of Caring!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER

*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mrs. Vann's 3rd grade, there is a "TIME MACHINE" reading room, where reading books are made available at different levels- all having to do with interesting events in history. After "traveling" in the time machine for a few days, students report interesting facts and trivia to the class.

PFC President's Message

Can you believe that we are almost at the end of the year? Only 4 days to go! This year seems to have flown by. For those 5th grade families that are moving on to Middle School with their last child, we will miss you!! Please be sure to join us next week for our final Spirit Wednesday as we say a special farewell to all the 5th graders!

Thanks to all of you who were able to attend the Informational Meeting on Wednesday. We hope that we were able to give you a lot of background about where are dollars are spent and answer any questions you had about the budget. Please feel free to contact one of the Executive Board members if you need more information.

I would like to send a special thanks to Anne & Jon Bone for hosting the Old Board/New Board Dinner on Thursday night. What a lovely setting and fun atmosphere for this special dinner. Thank you for your hospitality!!

A Note from Kathy Hamilton
As the year continues to wind down, I want to take a minute and thank last year's team of LASF chairs and shadows at Springhill: Sally Fonstein for shadowing me as a K-5 Rep; Rhodora Del Rosario, Sharon Kidd, Heidi Plumb and Kari Dahlen for bringing Springhill another enlightening Science Fair; Bonnie Min for keeping track of those instructors delivering the extra art and science classes to our kids; Shay Kurtz for getting out the announcements to the FF; and Holly Nolan and Kerry Bolen for organizing the art and music fair.

I also want to thank the individual room representatives for disseminating LASF information to their classrooms and helping out with all the various events on campus. We couldn't do our jobs without you and I hope you will consider being a LASF room rep again next year (sign up is at Scorpion days) or better yet consider a shadow position on the LASF Team!!! For more information on any of these positions, please contact me - we are always looking for new people to add to the LASF experience here at Springhill.

Looking Ahead, Let's Welcome the New Members of the 2009-2010 LASF Team!
Announcing Springhill's LASF team for the 2009-2010 school year!

Springhill K-5 Head Rep: Sally Fonstein
Billing: Bonnie Min
Publicity: Shay Kurtz
Art Fair-Co-Chairs: Kerry Bolen and Holly Nolan
Art Fair Shadow Joan Tooney
Fundraising Chair: Eric Fromer
Science Fair Co-Chairs: Heidi Plumb and Kari Dahlen

I have been with LASF in some capacity for 5 years now, as a science instructor, K-5 Springhill Rep and overall Head Rep for all 4 elementary schools. I have seen this organization take on the very big job of going through a strategic plan and reorganizing based on community wishes and district needs. Through it all, I was struck by the dedication of the individuals involved, and their commitment to providing a quality education for our kids. We face some challenging times ahead and I want to thank the parents for their continued support of LASF. Your generous donations have allowed us to bring extra art and science to the schools as well as offer district wide support of the choral/instrumental music teachers and science lab teachers at the elementary level, in addition to what we support at Stanley and Acalanes. As our strategic plan continues to unfold, I invite you to check back regularly to the LASF website for updates at www.lasf.org

Thanks again for a great year.
