Principal's Messages

Principal's Messages

A. I WISH EVERYONE A RELAXING, SAFE & REWARDING 4-DAY PRESIDENTS' DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND REFLECTING UPON THOSE PAST LEADERS WHOSE LEGACIES AND WISDOM MIGHT INSPIRE OUR COUNTRY's LEADERSHIP & OUR OWN CHOICES TODAY.

B. VANDALISM/DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: Please be aware that over the last several holiday weekends, we have had cases of vandalism and destruction of school property, particularly in the garden and garden greenhouse. If you are on campus during weekends, especially long weekends, or evenings please keep a watchful eye on the well being of our school and feel free to call the Lafayette Police Department (925-284-5010) to report any suspicious activity. Many thanks for supporting the Pillar of Caring and Citizenship!!!

C. ABSENCES: Please be aware that each day of a child's absence costs the District $43.50 per student per day regardless of reason for the absence. Certainly, if the child is sick, the child should stay home. We want to encourage families to schedule vacations on non-student days (whenever possible) and for absences of 5 days or more, complete an independent study. We must stress the importance of learning opportunities lost by missing school needlessly. Thank you for your cooperation!

D. THANK YOU TO ALL PARENTS WHO ATTENDED LAST WEEK'S 4th GRADE CONCERT: Some great musical talent was on display under the inspired guidance of Liz Brummel, Wendy Clymer, Vicki Ghulam and LASF volunteers. A job well done!

E. THANK YOU TO THE HUGE NUMBER PARENTS WHO ATTENDED LAST WEEK'S PFC MEETING to hear Dr. Brill's very important message about the financial crisis faced by the Lafayette School District in particular and the state of California at large. Let us know what your priorities are as we look at some tough fiscal decisions for the next several years.

F. ATTENTION 3rd GRADE PARENTS: OLSAT INFORMATION UPDATE: Results of the Otis Lennon School Abilities Test (OLSAT), administered to all third graders in the fall, will be available for you to pick up at the school office starting Monday, February 8th. Results must be picked up by a parent. If you would like to have the results mailed to you, please send a stamped, self -addressed envelope to the school office. A general interpretation of the scores will be provided with the results. If you would like additional information, you are invited to attend a Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, February 11th at the District Office Board Room (3477 School Street) at 10:00 a.m. Students who have been invited to participate in the Alternative Instruction Magnet class (AIM) at Burton Valley will be notified by February 8th. Questions regarding test results or placement in the AIM class at Burton Valley may be directed to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Rachel Zinn, at the District Office (927-3511).

G. PARENT ED OPPORTUNITY: Don't Lose Your Child to Video Games, the Internet, and Texting: Thursday, February 25, 7-9pm, Stanley Middle School Library: Children are losing their 'attachment' to the real people in their lives as the power and intensity of new interactive devices and media overwhelms normal activities and relationships. Please join Dr. Richard Freed, a psychologist in private practice in Orinda and with Kaiser Permanente, in a discussion of the issues and strategies for parents to combat the ever- increasing draw of the new technologies. Dr. Freed completed his training at Harvard Medical School and now works as a psychologist in private practice in Orinda and with Kaiser Permanente. He speaks nationally on the health effects of children's media use. His work has appeared on CBS Bay Area TV news, and he's been published in Pediatrics and Mothering Magazine.

H. 1st-5th GRADE REGISTRATION FOR 2010-2011:: We will be accepting 1st-5th grade registrations for the 2010-2011 school year starting Tuesday, February 9. Please inform any new neighbors or those whose children are currently in private schools who plan to have their children attend Springhill School next year. Remind them to bring the child's birth certificate, immunization record and two proofs of address. We also continue to accept registration for kindergartners for the 2010-2011 school year. Thank you.

I. SCIENCE FAIR: Please check the calendar and the LASF Corner of this week's Friday Flyer to find out what is happening with Springhill's Annual LASF Science Fair to be held Wednesday,February 17, 6:30 PM, in the MP Room. THE SIX PILLARS & PAY IT FORWARD CORNER

"The true civilization is where every man gives to every other every right that he claims for himself."
-- Robert Ingersoll, political leader, orator (1833-1899)

CHARACTER COUNTS!

AS YOU GO FORWARD DAILY, STAND TALL UPON THE PILLARS OF TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING & CITIZENSHIP!!!

Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School.

A. THANK YOU 3rd GRADE FOR THE ANNUAL SMILE TRAIN SEMI-FREDDIs GARLIC CROUTON SALE THAT TOOK PLACE WEDNESDAY, 2/10. Every $250 raised sponsors a childs cleft palate surgery somewhere in the world. Semi Freddi's croutons for $2 and apple juice for $1. Thank you all for Paying It Forward and supporting the pillars of Caring and Citizenship with this worthy cause! Thank you 3rd Grade!!!.

B. SOLES4SOULS: THANK YOU SPRINGHILL COMMUNITY FOR THE PLETHORA OF SHOES YOU HAVE DONATED FOR THOSE IN NEED IN HAITI!!! WELL DONE!!! YOU HAVE SUPPORTED THE PILLAR OF CARING BEYOND BELIEF!!!THANK YOU SO MUCH!

DIFFERENTIATION CORNER
*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Mr. Wong's 3rd grade, varied teaching approaches are provided in all lessons. This is to accommodate the many different learning styles. In each lesson taught, examples are provided for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. An example would be saying the vocabulary words aloud with the definition, reading the word in a sentence for context, and playing charades.

*Differentiated Instruction is not individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

TEAM GREEN CORNER
THE NEW FOUR Rs: Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle & Rot

A. SPRINGHILL OFFERS UP A GREEN VOCAL EXPERIENCE: Last Friday, Sustainable Lafayette and District Green Team videotaped the Springhill 3rd grade singing "The Four Rs Song" under the direction of Mr. Wodhams for use in promoting local green efforts in the community! Good job, 3rd graders of Paying It Forward and supporting the Pillars of Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Citizenship!!!

B. SPRINGHILL CONTINUES TO ALIGN ITS GREEN EFFORTS WITH THE DISTRICT GREEN TEAM AND SUSTAINABLE LAFAYETTE. LOOK FOR UPDATES WEEKLY.

C. WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR SPRINGHILL TEAM GREEN? Help us find ways to:
1. Explore school and community green pursuits that allow us to better address the State Standards/ Benchmarks as well as the Lafayette School District Strategic Plan;
2. Explore school and community green pursuits that provide a fiscal benefit to the schools and community;
3. Explore school and community green pursuits that address and enhance character development programs already in place (e.g. CHARACTER COUNTS!) in the Lafayette School District).
Springhill School pays it forward by keeping it green, supporting the Pillars of Caring, Respect, Responsibility & Citizenship!!!

D. SOLAR ENERGY - Springhill School should be "flipping the switch" to solar energy within the next month and will have its own ceremony.

PFC President's Message

Well we have past the 100th day mark last Friday and we are headed towards spring - can you feel it in the air?

Please check the Legislative Update provided by Karen Yuen. We are headed up to Sacramento next Wednesday to present lawmakers with letters from you and me. Advocacy Day is our way of showing elected officials how we feel about the lack of funding to our schools and to demand change. California is the 7th largest economy in the world yet our schools rank 48th in spending. Where is the money going? Please get involved - signed up for District e-updates, attend School Board Meetings, come to PFC Meetings, and be part of the solution!

The Boots and Buckles Bash is coming to Dr.Samman's Barn! The date is April 24th and we are excited! Do you love to throw a party? Do you have a great connection at a Napa winery? Do you own a Carwash? How about your favorite dry cleaner - do they want to donate? You should have all received an email with details on our Auction website or how to donate - have you checked it out yet? I heard a rumor that a group was putting together An Amazing Race Party - sounds fun to me! Did you know the Parent Parties make as much as $30,000 - pretty amazing?! So get a group of friends together and plan a party - it's fun! The Boots and Buckles Bash is all about community building, a lot of fun, and a little fundraising - be a part of the excitement!

Enjoy the long weekend - I know I will!

Truly,
Julie Donlon

LASF Science Fair - Inspiring Wonderment - Weds Feb. 17th 6:30-8:30pm

Man loves to wonder, and that is the seed of science.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Science Fair is almost here! On Weds, Feb 17th please bring all projects directly to the MP room before school. Projects should be turned in by 8:30 am! A Science Fair volunteer will be at the MP room at 7:45am.

Guest Scientist Student interviews will take place during the school day on the 17th. Let your children know that a Guest Scientist (volunteer) will ask them questions about their experiment - "Why did you choose this project? Was your hypothesis correct?"

When preparing posters, please remember to put your child(ren)'s name(s), the teacher's name(s), and the grade(s) on the top of the poster so that it can be put in the proper location in the MP room.

All students and families are welcome even if you did not submit a project! This year, in addition to viewing all the student projects, you can - partake in hands on activities from Camp Galileo and EdventureMore, see a live demonstration beehive, do a DNA extraction, and get magnetic with a couple of LASF science teachers. This Week in the Library

This Week in the Library

Happy Presidents Day! Happy Valentine's Day! And Happy Chinese New Year!

Remember, there are over 100 reasons to read. This week reason number 19 is "It sparks your imagination."

When Amy moved in next door Austin wrote her off as a yucky girl. Then he was invited to her birthday party and his mother said he had to bring her a present. Kindergartners laughed at Austin's efforts to get a really unique present for the girl next door in Don Gilmor's book Yuck, a Love Story.

Amelia's teacher has made cards for everyone to decorate at home. Amelia does her best to fix the cards-mending a broken heart on one with a Band-Aid, tossing peanuts into another card with a picture of a squirrel and the words "I'm nuts 4 U!," etc. First graders learned about Amelia Bedelia as a little girl and laughed at Amelia's misunderstandings as they listened to Amelia Bedelia's First Valentine by the original author's nephew, Herman Parish. By the way, Amelia Bedelia has amused children since 1963!

A young boy has the same birthday as Abraham Lincoln and learns as much about him as he can. He discovers that he and Lincoln have several things in common. He's tall and skinny like Lincoln was and has big hands like Lincoln did. As he learns more about Lincoln, he dreams of going to Washington, D.C. to see the Lincoln Memorial and to be inspired by Lincoln's words written there. Second graders enjoyed sharing what they know about our 16th president and learning some new things as they listened to Louise Borden's book A. Lincoln and Me.

Third graders worked with World Book's Student Discovery Encyclopedia, reviewing how to use the guide words at the top of each page, how to scan for information, and how to use section headings, captions, charts, and illustrations to help them find the information they need. Then each student researched an American president, finding out when and where his/her president was born and writing down one thing he did while he was president.

Using everything from jelly beans to bolts, from magnets to compasses, and from fabric scraps to baseballs, Hanoch Piven "builds" the characters of our presidents. Fourth graders listened to short anecdotes about several presidents and discussed the items Piven used to create their portraits in his book What Presidents Are Made Of. Then I shared some information about Theodore Roosevelt which they used to build their own group portrait. Finally we compared our whiteboard creation with Piven's portrait for a different take on Presidents' Day.

After reviewing the purpose and mechanics of using encyclopedias, fifth graders worked with the World Book Encyclopedia to learn some basic facts about various scientific terms. They defined their scientific term, gave an important fact about it, and wrote about why it was important and how it might affect them. They also voted on their favorite of the California Young Reader Medal books.

Check out our website at http://www.lafsd.k12.ca.us/people/smattern/index.htm. You will find updates on what's happening at the Springhill Library, a revised library wish list, reviews of new books, and links to many helpful resources.
