**** THE SIX PILLARS & PAY IT FORWARD CORNER ****

"Train up a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." - King Solomon, Proverbs 22:6

CHARACTER COUNTS!
AS YOU GO FORWARD DAILY, STAND TALL UPON THE PILLARS OF TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING & CITIZENSHIP!!!

Every week we will be including different aspects of our Pay It Forward theme for this year in the Friday Flyer. Character development should be a major component in any well-rounded educational program and it has been for many years at Springhill. Ask your children what their classes are doing for Pay It Forward. Come to Spirit Wednesday, 8:30 AM every Wednesday morning in the main courtyard and find out how we promote character development at Springhill School.

A. TRUST IN EDUCATION (TIE): Is the Springhill community ready to provide another two scholarships to keep Afghan children off the street and in school for another year? Our two students this year are Mariam, a 10 year old girl, and Hewad. a 12 year old boy. The cost has risen to $600 to fund such a student. Mr. Budd MacKenzie of TRUST IN EDUCATION visited our campus on last Monday, 5/3, to promote "THE BUCK STOPS HERE' program for this very purpose and to update our 4th and 5th graders on the progress of the school in Lalander, Afghanistan, that Springhill has helped to support for the last seven years. Help support the Pillar of Caring!
B. JUMPROPE FOR HEART: Over $6000 was raised for the American Heart Association by Springhill School students earning a dodgeball game against the faculty for Mrs. Deitch's 3rd grade & Mrs. Newcomb's 4th grade! Well done, Scorpions!!! Thank you to Ms. Beth Brown for coordinating this even and thank you all for supporting the Pillar of Caring!!!
C. JAMBA JUICE SALE: Our annual Student Council Jamba Sale to support the National Brain Tumor Society took place last week and raised over $400 to honor former students Zane Melmed & Matt Lynn, and former Springhill Office Manager, Jan Grenn, all of whom succumbed to brain cancer. A check for money raised was presented to the Melmed and Lynn families at this week's Spirit Wednesday for the National Brain Tumor Society. Thank you to all for supporting the Pillar of Caring including Jamba Juice and Mrs. Holly Nolan who coordinated this successful effort!
D. FIFTH GRADER LIA SWAN and Springhill thanks you all for your donations of used towels and sheets for her Tae Kwon Do service project. The towels and sheets will be used at Care for Cats in Pleasant Hill to wrap up newborn kittens and foster cats. Thank you for your donations and supporting the Pillar of Caring!
E. EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT: David Furtado is a Boy Scout with Troop 204 in Lafayette. For his Eagle Scout project, he is collecting new and gently used shoes for the Mother of Peace Orphanage in Zimbabwe. Collection bins will be available outside the school office during the week of May 24, 2010. The children of Zimbabwe are in desperate need of shoes so the donation of your child's gently used or new shoes will be very much appreciated. For any questions please call David at 925-818-1224.

**** DIFFERENTIATION CORNER ****

*Differentiated Instruction takes place in all of our classes. Each week, we will be profiling a particular teacher's implementation of Differentiated Instruction every week in the Friday Flyer. Don't miss it!!!

In Ms. Wilson's 4th grade, an individualized approach is used. Students who demonstrate mastery of topics as they are introduced are given more challenging activities to pursue while others receive guided instruction from the teacher. Struggling students meet separately in small groups for reteaching and additional practice, and they often receive one-on-one tutoring with our classroom aide. Hands-on activities and games are used often to allow children time to work with partners and small groups to apply their math skills and strategies in a playful atmosphere. Heather Records, our math specialist, is also available each Wednesday to provide additional insights and strategies. The goal is for our students to view themselves as competent, confident mathematicians.

*Differentiated Instruction is not individualized instruction, but rather the delivery of curriculum to students in a manner that complements their learning style while always challenging them at their ability level.

**** TEAM GREEN CORNER ****

THE NEW FOUR Rs: Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle & Rot

A. THE FIRST SPRINGHILL GREEN COUNCIL met last Tuesday and were provided with an excellent discussion on sustainability by Dr. Linda Riebel, a published author and expert in the field. Many suggestions came forth for maintaining a green school and community in the discussion that followed. Thank you Dr. Riebel for Paying It Forward to Springhill School!
B. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, IS "NO WASTE LUNCH DAY". Let's all try to eat our lunches with no waste except for the compost pile--reusable containers for food and beverages!!!
C. WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR SPRINGHILL TEAM GREEN?
Help us find ways to:

  1. Explore school and community green pursuits that allow us to better address the State Standards/Benchmarks as well as the Lafayette School District Strategic Plan;
  2. Explore school and community green pursuits that provide a fiscal benefit to the schools and community;
  3. Explore school and community green pursuits that address and enhance character development programs already in place (e.g. CHARACTER COUNTS!) in the Lafayette School District).
Springhill School pays it forward by keeping it green, supporting the Pillars of Caring, Respect, Responsibility & Citizenship!!!

LASF

LASF Art and Music Fair "Wrap Up"

THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped to make this year's LASF Art and Music Fair a wonderful success!! We really appreciate all of your hard work and support. A very special thank you to Holly Nolan - the LASF Art Fair Chair - for her organization and coordination of the evening's events and making sure everything came off without a hitch (even the weather cooperated)! Thank you as well to Holly's shadows - Joan Toney and Kelly Yiannikos - who diligently worked alongside Holly before, during and after the event. Thank you as well to Dreyer's Ice Cream for the complementary treats.

We would also like to thank:

Our wonderful LASF Art Instructors who have been working with our children all year long. The results were beautiful!

Our incredible and enthusiastic Music Instructors, Victoria Ghulam, Liz Brummel, and Wendy Clymer for putting together a terrific music program. It is great to see all their hard work and that of the students in action!!

Congratulations to our Fast Frame Luck of the Draw winners! Congratulations to Jane Bishop (K), Jordan Starr (1st), Sidney Zimmerman (2nd), Jay Wolff (3rd), Zak Singh (4th), and Timothy Wong (5th) whose artwork was selected at random and will be framed and put on display around Lafayette and then in the Springhill School Office.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! (yes...more Thank yous!)

LASF is happy to report that the results of the Spring Fundraising drive are record-setting! So far, we have reached a combined total of $950,000 in pledges and gifts. We owe it all to you - all those generous parents and other community members who responded to the fundraising message. Our success is a testimony to our schools' value to our children and to the significance that we all place on an outstanding education. We cannot thank you enough for your support!

PFC President's Message

Are you ready for sleeping in and not making lunches? I know I am - only 2 more weeks!

Thank you to Holly Nolan and Sally Fonstein for a fantastic LASF Art Fair! Top Dog - as always - was a hit! Despite the iffy weather the Fair and Open House was well attended. What a great way for us - the parents - to see what are children have been up to in the classroom. We are so fortunate to have wonderful Teachers at Springhill Elementary! As we wind down the year make sure you thank your child's Teacher for a great year!

We are hard at work streamlining the Scorpion Days packet and registration. When you receive your letter this summer please read it carefully - there will be information on changes to the registration as well as on the changes to the way LASF/PFC are funded. Please read carefully and thoughtfully. The changes being made are for the benefit of your child's education in these difficult times. The crisis is far from over - we all need to understand that. The District has made significant cuts to their budget in response to the cuts coming from Sacramento - these are hard times. As a community we need to pull together to fight for our children. It is important to understand the changes to LASF - name, methods of fundraising, and responsibilities - are an effort to provide the very best for our schools. It is a collaborative effort - you, the PFC, and LASF!

Have a great weekend!

Truly,
Julie Donlon

This Week in the Library

Remember, there are over 100 reasons to read. This week reason number 32 is "You can discover new heroes."

Please note that this was the final week for class visits to the library. All library books were due at the end of this week.

I spoke with the students about some summer reading programs they can try. We have a district-wide program called Camp Read-a-Lot. The Storyteller also has a summer reading program. I mentioned that both programs have suggested reading lists and a sheet to record the books students have read, as well as prizes for those who complete the programs.

Kindergartners heard The Hermit Crab by Carter Goodrich. This story about a shy crab who inadvertently becomes a hero to the other marine animals ties in with what they're learning about seashores in the classroom.

First graders were entertained by The Creepy Crawly Calypso by Tony Langham. Ten kinds of spiders and insects come together to create calypso music in this story, accompanied by a CD of the music and extra information about the insects and the instruments used to create the music. First graders were dancing in place to the infectious beat as we listened to the CD!

Second graders listened to Henry Aaron's Dream, written and illustrated by Matt Tavares, the story of a young black boy from Alabama who dreamed of playing baseball in the Major Leagues and who didn't let any obstacles stop him.

Third graders laughed at Chester's Masterpiece, written and illustrated by Chester (with no help from Mélanie Watt.) This entertaining look at writing had them laughing while they empathized with Chester.

Fourth graders listened spellbound to Nubs: the True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle by Major Brian Dennis, Kirby Larson, and Mary Nethery. Nubs, a mistreated, wild dog, became attached to Major Dennis in Iraq, but Marines were not allowed to have pets. So Major Dennis and his team tried to raise money to send Nubs to the U.S.

Fifth graders laughed at David Wisniewski's exposés in The Secret Knowledge of Grown-ups and The Secret Knowledge of Grown-ups: the Second File. Mr. Wisniewski uses irony, puns, references to well- known characters and stories, and many other humorous devices in his outlandish stories about why grown-ups tell kids to do or not to do something.
